I have not been to New Orleans since 1990, and then I was only there for a few hours. I spent the afternoon and evening walking around the French Quarter. I am staying on Canal Street. They have a nice light rail system that has been in operation since 1823. I need to give it a ride. Instead I walked down to the river to see the Mississippi. I found the Aquarium of the Americas there. It was recommended to me by a friend. I dropped $17 on an admission ticket and went inside. The sign said the otter training and feeding was coming up shortly so I made a B-line for the second floor. The otters we pretty cool. They had two from Monterrey. Overall the aquarium was pretty mediocre. I reminded me a lot of the Dallas World Aquarium in the way the exhibits we laid out and the way they used space to lead you around.
I walked further to Cafe du Monde and then across Jackson Square to Bourbon Street. I got some lunch and did a little gift shopping before heading back to my hotel to catch up on work.
Looking for something to do that evening I found a little art house playing "In the Shadow of the Moon". This is a documentary about the Apollo missions as told by the astronauts. I went to see that. Afterward I walked back up to Bourbon Street for some live music and something to eat.
Jackson Square is all locked down for the night and the cats take over. I took a picture of all the cats in the square before my battery gave out. I walked down to the river to have a cop cruise by in a golf cart and kick me out. The water front is closed after 10.
Like I said I have never experienced the night life on Bourbon Street before so I cannot compare to the past. I do not remember it being so raunchy. The music, food and drink was all good but it is certainly not a family-friendly environment. I had recently considered bringing my family through on a road trip to Florida. That trip did not happen and now I am glad. This made Vegas look like Disney.
